African ClimateTech has become the continent’s largest destination for venture funding — but the headline numbers tell only part of the story. The State of ClimateTech in Africa 2.0, produced by Briter in partnership with Catalyst Fund, FSD Africa and BFA Global, with data support from Africa: The Big Deal, looks beneath the totals to ask how the ecosystem is actually maturing.
Drawing on funding data covering more than 700 companies and over 1,400 deals between 2016 and 2025, the report introduces a new ClimateTech taxonomy and applies an adapted Carlota Perez framework to show that African ClimateTech is not one market but many — with applications from energy generation to water access maturing at very different speeds, under very different conditions.
This report is for anyone deciding where and how climate capital should flow: investors and fund managers, DFIs, donors and foundations, commercial lenders, policymakers, and the founders building the companies themselves. It offers a shared basis for understanding where each part of the ecosystem sits — and what kind of capital, policy or support it needs to progress.
