Project description

This project works to improve data-quality and usage at the National Health Insurance Agency in Ghana which covers ~50% of the Ghanaian population.

Our partner, PharmAccess, supports the NHIA to drive more effective health outcomes, increased membership, and greater cost efficiency.

FSD Africa will support PharmAccess and NHIA in building and applying capabilities for data analysis that lead to adjustments in operations and provider/payer relationships.

Target Results

Overall, this project will positively impact the fragility and vulnerability of the Ghanaian population by increasing the capacity of government and the private sector to sustainably operate and develop critical health finance systems in Ghana and by applying clear and transparent frameworks and metrics to Ghana’s national roadmap for UHC and health finance.

Progress to date

The project is in implementation and the first reporting cycle has been completed.

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has a new CEO who has

  • Invited the PharmAccess (Ghana) CEO to is advisory council
  • Stated his intention to boost NHIA data analysis capabilities by establishing a dedicated data analysis unit – which will be a key partner for the project. This unit will likely be instituted in July 2022.

FSD Africa is coordinating closely with FCDO Ghana – in particular, to align with overall UK aid support to the health sector
