Dr. Robert Akunga

Associate, Catalytic Transactions

Robert is an investment professional with over five years of experience in transaction advisory, financial modelling, and financial markets analysis across East Africa. He has worked on complex investment and financing transactions across infrastructure (including water, energy, transport and digital infrastructure), and real economy sectors. His work focuses on capital structuring, investment appraisal, and financial sustainability, supporting initiatives that strengthen project bankability and mobilise capital into underserved and impact-oriented sectors. Earlier in his career, he served as a Financial Economist at the Central Bank of Kenya, with experience across financial systems, including capital markets, and macro-financial analysis, informing his perspective on the role of markets in long-term economic development across Sub-Saharan Africa.

Prior to joining FSD Africa, Robert worked at PwC Kenya in the Deals – Transaction Advisory team, supporting project and corporate finance mandates across public and private sector clients. His experience includes exposure to public-private partnership transactions and climatealigned and green finance initiatives, working with multidisciplinary teams across East Africa. At FSD Africa, Robert is part of the Catalytic Transactions team, focussing on structuring and scaling investment solutions that mobilise private capital into underserved sectors. His work centers on improving investment readiness and structuring blended finance solutions to unlock private capital across priority sectors.

Robert holds a PhD in Financial Economics from Loughborough University (UK) with research and published work focused on Sub-Saharan African financial markets, a Master’s degree in Finance and Management from Cranfield University (UK), and a Bachelor’s degree in Actuarial Science from the University of Kent, (UK). He is also an Associate of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment (ACSI)
